Our Favorite Place to Snorkel in Puerto Morelos

A Local's Guide to Snorkeling with the Co-op in Puerto Morelos

Coming from both an expat and a local from Puerto Morelos, we’ve had the privilege of discovering some of the town's best-kept secrets. One such gem is snorkelling with the Co-op, an experience that offers an unforgettable glimpse into the underwater wonders of our coastal paradise. Below you will learn more about the experience and som tips and helpful things to know!

Booking Ahead with Pedro

For a seamless experience, I recommend booking your snorkeling trip with the Co-op in advance, especially if you're traveling with a group. The Co-op keeps group sizes intimate, typically limited to no more than 10 people. Pedro, the Manager, is a warm and welcoming host, fluent in Spanish and with enough English to assist you with any queries or special requests.

Friendly and Knowledgeable Guides

The guides at the Co-op are not only friendly but also incredibly knowledgeable about the local marine life. Most guides speak some English, making communication easy and enriching. They'll help you get fitted with your gear and provide all the information you need for a safe and enjoyable snorkeling adventure.

Exploring the Puerto Morelos Reef

The Co-op takes you on a short 15-minute boat ride to the reef, where a world of wonder awaits beneath the surface. The Puerto Morelos reef is home to a dazzling array of marine life, from colorful tropical fish to majestic rays and even the occasional sea turtle. Snorkelers follow their guide for about 40 minutes, exploring the shallow waters and marveling at the vibrant ecosystem of the reef.

Fish Species You Might Encounter

While snorkeling at the Puerto Morelos reef, keep an eye out for some of the region's most iconic fish species, including the vibrant Queen Angelfish, the striking French Angelfish, and the graceful Spotted Eagle Ray. You might also spot the elusive Moray Eel peeking out from its coral hideout or the playful Parrotfish munching on coral.

A Heartwarming Moment

During our snorkeling trip, our guide went above and beyond to ensure everyone had a memorable experience. At one point, he noticed a little girl struggling to keep up with her mother. Without hesitation, he grabbed a floatation device and gently pushed her along, allowing her mother to relax and enjoy the snorkeling experience. It was a heartwarming moment that truly exemplified the care and dedication of the Co-op's guides.

Tips for a Great Experience

  • Wear environmentally-friendly sunscreen to protect the reef.

  • Be mindful not to touch or disturb the delicate coral formations.

  • Consider booking a morning trip for cooler temperatures and better visibility.

Price and Tipping

During our visit, the price for snorkeling with the Co-op was 300 pesos per person, making it an affordable and memorable experience for all. As a gesture of appreciation for the guides' hard work and dedication, it's customary to leave a tip.

Snorkelling with the Co-op in Puerto Morelos is an experience that will stay with you long after you've dried off. From the stunning marine life to the caring guides, every moment is a testament to the beauty and wonder of our natural world. If you're looking to dive into the magic of Puerto Morelos, be sure to add snorkelling with the Co-op to your itinerary. You won't regret it!
